En realidad no sólo os se trató de conducir un Mustang por todos los Cayos de Florida hasta el punto más al sur de los Estados Unidos (Key West) y al origen de la Famosa «Overseas Highway» (Route 1) Este de los Estados Unidos, sino que os queremos contar también la historia de un viaje en coche desde Key West hasta Madrid, puesto que este mismo coche que condujimos en Key West viajó hasta Madrid en barco y hoy lo tenemos en nuestra casa de Londres, aparcado justo aquí fuera mientras escribimos éste artículo sobre viajar por los Cayos de Florida.
El trayecto que recorre todas las islas que forman los cayos de Florida es algo más de 180 kilómetros, viaje que realizamos en un precioso Ford Mustang por la carretera 1 de la parte continental de Florida hasta Key West, sin duda, una experiencia sensacional. Además de la belleza natural a lo largo de la ruta, así como las aguas azul verdoso que salpican las islas en los tramos de carretera que cruzan de unas a otras, tramos que impresionan por derecho propio como una maravilla de la ingeniería.
Los tramos de carretera cruzan extensiones imposibles de agua, sobre el océano Atlántico a la izquierda, y el Golfo de México y Caribe hacia la derecha, en sentido Continente hacia Key West. La Highway 1 está en todo el trayecto hasta Key West, adornada y galardonada con temas clásicos americanos, como si se tratase de la ruta 66; desde tiendas de regalos con los típicos collares playeros de conchas o corales, hamburgueserías, puestos de milk shakes, patatas fritas; entre otros cientos de miles de extravagantes tiendas, esculturas, casas y sorpresas. En resumen, no es un viaje aburrido ni mucho menos.
Pero la superficie es sólo la mitad de las sorpresas que encontraremos en el viaje hacia Key West. Debajo de la superficie del océano se encuentra un mundo aparte de los peces y los arrecifes de coral de Technicolor.
Para hacer este viaje, lo mejor es invertir al menos cuatro días para disfrutar al completo de las islas, lo ideal es una semana. Además es mejor evitar las «horas punta», que son los viernes en sentido ida hasta Key West y domingo en sentido de vuelta al continente. Evitando la hora punta podrás disfrutar de la brisa del viento, ventanillas abajo o descapotados, disfrutando de las islas.
Una de las maravillas de Key West es disfrutar de la puesta de sol en Mallory Square Pier, nos recordó mucho al ritual que se hace en muchas playas de Ibiza (España), aquí este ritual, se repite día tras día para despedir el Sol. Es como un circo con artistas en la calle, personas vestidos de etiqueta, turistas borrachos dando tumbos, música, ruido, risas … todo ellos, mientras se pone el brillante sol sobre el agua. Una experiencia realmente bonita.
Hay muchos acogedores y bonitos hoteles a lo largo de la ruta, pero también hay hoteles de auténtico lujo con playa privada, algo que, obviamente no pudimos evitar, Key West es un destino que puede proporcionar una experiencia realmente lujosa.
Y sí, efectivamente éste precioso Ford Mustang descapotable terminó este magnífico viaje en el final de la «overseas highway» 1, pero, también empezó ahí su viaje de retorno, más alejado de lo que el propio coche esperaba ya que volvió de viaje a España con nosotros, un poco más tarde, pero tomó un barco de vuelta desde Miami hasta Valencia para ahora, acompañarnos por las carreteras de España y hoy -aún con matrícula española- por las carreteras de Reino Unido.
Actually, it wasn’t just a travel driving a Ford Mustang for all the Florida Keys to reach the southernmost point of the United States (Key West) driving across the origin of the famous «Overseas Highway» (Route 1) of the Eastern United States, it’s also a story of a drive from Key West to Madrid (Spain), because the same car that we drove into Key West traveled to Madrid by boat and today we have it in our London home, parked right out here while we are writing this article.
The path to cross all the islands is more than 180 kilometers, an unforgettable trip that we made in a beautiful Ford Mustang on the Highway 1 from mainland Florida to the Key West, certainly a sensational experience. Besides the natural beauty along the route, as well as blue-green waters that dot the islands in road sections crossing from one to another, sections that impress its own right as an engineering marvel.
The road sections crossing islands are amazing, with the Atlantic Ocean to the left, and the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean sea to the right, in the way from continent to Key West. The highway 1 is all the way to Key West, decorated with classic American themes, as the world famous Route 66; from souvenir shops with typical shorebirds shells or coral necklaces, hamburgers, milk shakes, chips; among hundreds of thousands of quirky shops, sculptures, houses and surprises. In short, lots of attractions and emotions in a short space of road.
But the surface of the island is only half of the surprises we will encounter on the trip to Key West. Beneath the surface of the ocean it’s a world apart from the fish and coral reefs in Technicolor.
To make this trip, the best is to invest at least four full days to enjoy the islands, ideally a week. It’s also better to avoid the «peak times», which are the outward direction until Friday and Sunday in Key West sense back to the mainland. Avoiding the pick times, you can enjoy the breeze, or open-topped windows down, enjoying the islands.
One of the wonders of Key West is undoubtedly to enjoy the sunset at Mallory Square Pier, reminded us much the ritual done in many beaches of the amazing Ibiza (Spain), here this ritual is being repeated day after day to say «see you later» to the sun and «good bye» to another day in the life. It’s like a circus, with street artists, people in luxury dresses, drunk tourists stumbling, music, noise, laughter … all of them, enjoying the bright sunsets over the water. A really nice experience.
There are many cozy and beautiful hotels along the route, but there are also great luxury hotels with a private beach in Key West, so we enjoyed the stay in one of the best hotels, Key West is a destination that can provide a truly luxurious experiences.
And yes, indeed this beautiful Ford Mustang convertible finished this magnificent journey at the end of the «Overseas Highway» 1, but also this car started there his return journey farther than the car itself expected since it returned traveling to Spain with us, a little bit later, but the car took was shipped from Miami to Valencia, and now, join us on the roads of Spain and today -even with spanish plate- this car is with us on the roads of Britain.
