Aclamada como una de las maravillas del mundo por la revista National Geographic, este SPA geotérmico es una auténtica joya por derecho propio. La energía sostenible producida por la central eléctrica de Svartsengi muestra que la naturaleza y la tecnología pueden trabajar juntos, creando en este lugar un SPA único y sin igual en el mundo.
Después de varios días sin parar de viaje por Islandia, terminar por la tarde de nuestro último día en el Blue Lagoon de Islandia fue el mejor colofón posible a nuestra primera aproximación a éste maravilloso y mágico país.
¿POR QUÉ ES TAN ESPECIAL EL BLUE LAGOON?
El agua geotérmica de color azul turquesa de sus piscinas tiene efectos beneficiosos sobre nuestra piel gracias a sus ingredientes activos: sílice, minerales y algas. Pero, exactamente, ¿que tienen estos ingredientes para que lo que suceda en el Blue Lagoon sea mágico?:
- Sílice: Es sin duda el mejor amigo para mantener un brillo juvenil en la piel, ayuda a mantener la humedad y elasticidad, es decir, perfecto para evitar el envejecimiento y la flacidez de la piel. La sílice se encuentra normalmente en un entorno volcánico, algo de lo que Islandia y en particular el Blue Lagoon pueden presumir. Dentro de la piscina hay barro de sílice, por eso verás a mucha gente con la cara tapada de este maravilloso barro blanco.
- Minerales: Los minerales son vitales para nuestra piel, ya que son una parte importante de la fórmula para mantener nuestra piel sana. La mayoría de los cosméticos para el cuidado de la piel incluyen minerales, pero aquí, los tenemos directamente de la naturaleza.
- Algas: Una de las características únicas de la Laguna Azul de Islandia, es el alga que se puede encontrar en sus aguas termales. ¿CÓMO EMPEZÓ TODO?
El agua rica en Minerales del Blue Lagoon de Islandia es el producto final de la planta de energía geotérmica cercana Svartsengi. ¿¡ Cómo !?, el ciclo comienza cuando se mezcla de agua dulce y el agua de mar, calentándose ambos por los campos de lava subterráneos que luego producen un fluido que termina en un yacimiento geotérmico. El fluido del yacimiento se utiliza para alimentar la planta de energía de Svartsengi para generar electricidad y calefacción en varias zonas en Islandia. Después de este proceso, el agua termina en las piscinas de la Laguna Azul de Islandia.
Todo esto empezó en los años 70 cuando los empleados de la planta de energía comenzaron a bañarse en la piscina geotérmica cercana, donde descubrieron que el agua tenía beneficios curativos. Las aguas en la Laguna Azul están consideradas como uno de los principales tratamientos para la psoriasis en Islandia, Dinamarca y las Islas Feroe.
¿VISITAR LA LAGUNA AZUL?
Este famoso balneario geotérmico está a tan sólo 30 minutos del aeropuerto de Keflavik, el principal aeropuerto internacional de Islandia y a 40 minutos en coche desde Reykjavik.
Hay diferentes compañías de autobuses que realizan la ruta Keflavik – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik. Alternativamente, y como es -creo que normal- en Islandia, un alquiler de coches es lo mejor para moverse no sólo hasta aquí sino a cualquier otro punto del país, en todo caso, si no es así, también es muy fácil llegar en taxi.
Tanto si acabas de llegar a Islandia como si es tu último día en el país antes de volar de regreso, en la Laguna Azul hay unas consignas especialmente diseñadas para guardar equipajes, donde te darán un ticket para recogerlo más tarde.
Para disfrutar de la visita a este impresionante y único balneario geotérmico, sugerinos reservar los pases de acceso online, donde podrás ver además que hay diferentes paquetes y precios. Una vez te encuentres en el recinto, tienes que dirigirte hacia la zona de recepción, donde recogerás el pase, que es en realidad una pulsera magnética que te identifica con el paquete que hayas comprado. En nuestro caso, teníamos un pase que incluía toallas, un kit de aseo y bebidas en la piscina.
Una vez estés en el vestuario, puede coger cualquier taquilla que esté abierta, para bloquear la taquilla, verás que hay un escáner por cada conjunto de taquilla, pues bien, una vez cierres tu puerta, debes pasar la pulsera de inmediato por el escáner para bloquear la taquilla. La verdad que es bastante fácil, pero creerme que me llevó mucho tiempo descubrir esto.
Antes de entrar en la zona de piscinas en el exterior, no te sorprendas de ver a gente desnuda, no es que las piscinas seas nudistas, ¡no!, es simplemente porque es obligatorio ducharse sin bañador, algo que se advierte en los carteles.
El agua de la laguna está a una temperatura constante de entre 37 y 39 grados centígrados durante todo el año. Hay varias zonas en la piscina donde estar, desde una zona más caliente de lo normal, zonas burbujeantes, una zona de cascadas, la zona del barro mineral, una impresionante cueva sauna, y … un pequeño bar en el centro de la laguna donde se pueden pedir bebidas, escanearán tu pulsera y si no las tenías incluidas te las cobrarán al salir del SPA, en todo caso, los precios están bien detallados allí.
Sin lugar a dudas es un lugar ideal para relajarse, tanto en las piscinas como en las zonas de descanso interiores donde no pude evitar quedarme dormido es las comodísimas hamacas.

After several nonstop traveling days across Iceland, we arrived at the the Blue Lagoon the last afternoon in Iceland, so it was the best end to our first approach to this wonderful and magical country.
WHY IS IT SO SPECIAL THE BLUE LAGOON ?
The geothermal turquoise water of the lagoon has beneficial effects on our skin thanks to its active ingredients, which are silica, minerals and algae. But exactly what are these ingredients for what happens in the Blue Lagoon ?, the magic are in:
- Silica: This is undoubtedly the best friend to keep a youthful glow in our skin, it helps to maintain moisture and elasticity. The silica is typically in a volcanic environment, so, this area is the best place to. There are some silica mud within the pool, that’s why you will see many people with their faces covered with this wonderful white clay.
- Minerals: Minerals are vital for our skin, as they are an important part of the formula to keep our skin healthy. Most cosmetics for skin care include minerals, but here, we have it directly from nature.
- Algae: One of the unique features at the Blue Lagoon, is the algae that can be found in its hot springs. These blue-green algae can do wonders to help the skin to produce natural collagen, this can help to protect and repair the damage caused by harmful UV rays.
HOW IT ALL STARTED ?
The mineral-rich water of the Blue Lagoon is the end product of the nearby geothermal power plant of Svartsengi. What !?, The cycle begins when mixing freshwater and seawater, being heated both by the underground lava fields, all this produce a fluid that ends in a geothermal reservoir. The reservoir fluid is used to power the Svartsengi power plant to generate electricity and heating in several areas in Iceland. After this process, the water ends up in the pools of the Blue Lagoon.
This all started in the 70’s when employees of the power plant began to swim in the nearby geothermal and natural pool, where they discovered that the water had healing benefits.
HOW CAN I VISIT THE BLUE LAGOON ?
This famous geothermal SPA is only 30 minutes from Keflavik airport, the main international airport in Iceland and 40 minutes drive from Reykjavik.
There are different bus companies that perform the route Keflavik – Blue Lagoon – Reykjavik. Alternatively, and as I think it’s usually in Iceland, a car rental is best way to move you not only to the Blue Lagoon, but elsewhere in the country, anyway, is also very easy to reach the Blue Lagoon by taxi .
Whether you’ve just arrived in Iceland as if it’s your last day in the country before flying home, the Blue Lagoon have an space specially designed to store luggage, where you’ll get a ticket to pick it up later.
To enjoy the visit to this impressive and unique geothermal SPA, I fully recommend to book the tickets online, and also check in advance the different packages and prices. Once you are at the Blue Lagoon reception, you will get the pass, which is actually a magnetic bracelet that identifies you with the puchased package. In our case, we had a pass including towels, a toilet-kit and drinks at the pool.
Once you’re in the locker room, you can take any available (open) locker, you’ll notice a scanner for each set of lockers, well, once you close your locker door, you must pass the bracelet immediately by the scanner in order to block it. The truth is quite easy, but believe me, it took me long to discover.
Before entering the pool area outside, don’t be surprised to see some naked people, it’s because is mandatory to have shower without a swimsuit.
The water in the lake is at a constant temperature between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius throughout the year. There are several pool areas to stay, from a warmer area than normal, bubbling areas, an area of waterfalls, a mineral mud area, a stunning sauna cave, and … a small bar in the center of the lagoon where you can order drinks, you just have to scan your bracelet and if you don’t had the drinks included, you will pay that when you return the bracelet in the exit, in any case, prices are well detailed there in the bar.
Undoubtedly the Blue Lagoon is an amazing place to relax both in the pools and indoor rest areas where I couldn’t avoid falling asleep at the very comfortable hammocks.
